Our Engagement for Safety

The health and safety of all our employees is of the utmost importance at Beiersdorf. Since the very beginning of our company’s history, ensuring the wellbeing of our employees has been an integral part of our company culture and is firmly anchored in one of our Core Values: “Care.” For us, care is not a sentiment, but an action – and it goes beyond the care of skin. It reaches out to communities, societies, the environment, and – of course – to our employees. The daily commitment of each and every one of our employees is one of the key factors for the sustained success of Beiersdorf. Therefore, preventing injuries and illnesses as well as implementing environmental and occupational safety and health standards are central in all our activities.

OUR SAFETY STRATEGY

Our corporate safety roadmap focuses on three main categories: improving our management process, addressing the key risks, and further build one safety team.

We are expanding our measures to total recordable injuries, which includes any injury that requires medical treatment beyond first aid, or have resulted in work restrictions. This will enable us to focus on all other injuries that were not severe enough to lead to a loss of a working day, supporting us to further reduce all accidents.

Furthermore, our strategy also focuses on improving the overall management of hazardous substances and continuously reducing the ergonomic risks associated with activities.

While we carefully examine the less serious accidents in our operations, we do not want to lose focus on the potentially dangerous incidents, especially the ones related to life-critical activities or risks. With this we also analyze all potentially serious incidents that could have led to life-changing situations, giving us the possibility to review our safety programs and controls and allowing us to continuously improve.

With respect to our production centers, one of the main focuses at the moment is to develop our internal process safety standards, which will help us to ensure that our processes are safely designed and monitored to protect our employees and contractors who work or interact with them. This program complements our machinery safety program, that has been deployed at our sites, the focus being to improve machine protection and defining the requirements for new work equipment.

SAFETY RESULTS ARE IMPROVING

Zero harm is our long-term objective. To reach this we take action to continuously build a culture of safety across the business. These actions and measures are focused on reducing risks, establishing safe working conditions, compliance, and safety-positive behavior in all areas of the company.

Our accident frequency rate (AFR) measures the number of lost time injuries (injuries that keeps our people away from work for more than 24 hours) per million worked hours.

Since 2017 we have reduced our AFR in our supply chain by 83%, dropping from 2.2 in 2017 to 0.38 in 2023. And during the entire year of 2023 76% of our factories worldwide had zero lost time injury. This is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates the commitment and engagement of all our leaders and employees towards safety.
